“The amalgam which strikes me as most specific to New Zealands location in the South Pacific is John Bell’s work with the Dominion Centenary Brass Band and the Spoilers of Utopia. These projects offer a kind of jazzy music that draws respectively on brass band traditions- which have a very rich history in NZ- and Pacific Islands hymnody. Both groups perform with the kind of ragged exuberance I associate with some of the freer music of the 1960s, and their musical combinations are unique, joyful and often funny.” (from Norman Meehan’s ‘New Zealand Jazz Life’ VUW press 2017)
